The Department of Plant Pathology at S. Thangapazham Agricultural College has established a model mushroom cultivation unit focusing on oyster mushroom species (Pleurotus florida Pf1 and P. djamor APK1). Our cultivation protocol emphasizes sustainable practices by utilizing agricultural waste substrates, particularly wheat straw, through optimized sterilization and spawning techniques. The college provides hands-on training to students in all aspects of mushroom production – from substrate preparation to harvesting and post-harvest management. Our climate-controlled cultivation facility maintains ideal temperature (22-26°C) and humidity (80-85%) conditions, serving as a demonstration unit for efficient small-scale mushroom farming. The program not only enhances students’ practical skills but also promotes mushroom cultivation as a viable agri-business opportunity for rural entrepreneurs, aligning with our mission of sustainable agricultural development and waste valorization.
