Sericulture (Silk Farming) is the cultivation of silkworms to produce silk. It involves rearing of silkworms like,
- Mulberry silkworm, Bombyx mori
- Tasar silkworm, Antheraea mylitta
- Muga silkworm, Antheraea assamensis
- Eri silkworm, Samia ricini
Each type of silkworm produces silk with unique texture, colour and strength. Primarily Bombyx mori are mainly grown for silk production. The process includes several stages such as silkworm egg production, hatching, larval growth, cocoon formation and silk reeling. We are cultivating 0.5 acre of mulberry in our college for rearing of mulberry silk worm. Bombyx mori produce white cocoon, average yield 30-40 kg per 100 dfls.
